Huge local interest in Lion Ark at the Starz Denver Film Festival in Colorado – home to the movie’s big cat stars – has led to sell out screenings for the film, which opens this weekend.

Lion Ark follows how a team from ADI secured a ban on animal circuses in Bolivia and then, when the circuses defied the law, set about rescuing every animal. Twenty-five lions were saved during the operation and then airlifted to Denver for a new life at The Wild Animal Sanctuary (TWAS) at Keenesburg, Colorado.

When the Lion Ark flight arrived at Denver International Airport almost three years ago, the story gripped the city. That massive local interest is now reflected in Lion Ark being the first film at the festival to sell out its opening screenings this weekend, with tickets still available for the screening on Monday.

Tim Phillips, Director of Lion Ark says: “Screening Lion Ark in Denver is like coming home. This is where the Lion Ark flight landed and most importantly we are just a few miles from where the lions live today. I can vividly remember us touching down at Denver International Airport, the excitement and joy of knowing that the lions were safe. I feel we have captured in the film just what it takes to rescue animals in very difficult circumstances, and how people working together can transform the lives of animals.”

The film captures the desperate struggles to save the animals in Bolivia, the epic arrival at Denver International Airport, and the race against time in Keenesburg to prepare facilities in time for the arrival of the lions. The finale is exhilarating as the lions run free in their new Colorado home.

Saturday night will see several key protagonists who appear in Lion Ark reunited including Jan Creamer (President of ADI and Producer of Lion Ark), Tim Phillips (Vice President of ADI and Director of Lion Ark), Pat Craig (founder of TWAS) and Casey Craig (Operations Director of TWAS).

The screenings on Saturday and Sunday are being followed by special ticket only receptions to raise funds for the next major ADI rescue operation in Peru. Tickets for the receptions are $40 from ADI (323) 935 2234.

The Lion Ark filmmakers will also be part of the festival’s Women+Film panel on Saturday, November 9th discussing animal rights.
