In January, the three ex-lab monkeys rehomed by ADI to the Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary were let out into their outdoor quarantine enclosure.

Baloo, the male, walked out out first, closely followed by the two females, Betty and Boo.

Unsure of their surroundings at first, they hesititated, nipping back and forth between the indoor area and the outdoor enclosure. Finally, they ventured out into the fresh air and began to explore their new home.

The three monkeys were evidently fascinated and excited by their new surroundings; Baloo called out to a male and a female in the neighbouring enclosures, who saw him and answered.

The three macaques, who had been used in neurology experiments at a major European animal research laboratory, were no longer required and were scheduled to die by the end of last year. Now rehomed by ADI, they will spend six months in quarantine before being released into a permanent outdoor enclosure.
