ADI’s countdown of magic moments for animals in 2016...

#10 Magic Moment of 2016: MONKEYS SAVED FROM PET DEALERS.

A resounding vote at CITES prohibiting international trade in Barbary macaques, saw our intense campaigns in Johannesburg pay off, saving thousands from suffering!

A few other wins are worthy of a mention too: The US announced ban on import of trophies from captive-bred lions in South Africa; near-total ban on the domestic ivory trade; the END Wildlife Trafficking Act helped to protect wildlife from poaching/trafficking; practices such as aerial shooting, live trapping and snaring of wolves and coyotes were banned on Alaska’s national refuge lands; annual bear hunt in Florida paused to consider humane approaches.

#9 Magic Moment of 2016: ANIMAL ACTS DROPPED AS A RESULT OF ADI EXPOSES.

Our undercover footage has transformed the way people perceive performing animals. These investigations continue to catch up with the abusers: Circus Bouglione dropped elephant trainer Lars Holscher after ADI footage is shown on TV; Dirk Arthur (pictured) and the last animal magic act in Las Vegas was dropped; more establishments ended their contracts with the notorious Have Trunk Will Travel, including Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.

#8 Magic Moment of 2016: JAMES, FREE AS A BIRD!

One hot morning in northern Peru, accompanied by police, we pounded on the door of a restaurant believed to be holding illegally trafficked animals. We left with a spider monkey, called Pepe Lucho, and a military macaw called James. After a period of rehabilitation, including work to strengthen his wing muscles, James was released back into his natural world above the Amazon forest.

Many of the animals we save cannot be returned to the wild, so we must try to provide the closest thing possible, but when we can save these animals AND set them free, it is magical.

#7 Magic Moment of 2016: BILL TO BAN WILD ANIMAL ACTS REINTRODUCED INTO THE US CONGRESS.

In November, we re-introduced the Traveling Exotic Animal Public Safety & Protection Act (TEAPSPA) into the US Congress with bi-partisan sponsorship from Reps Ryan Costello (R-PA) and Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) – a Bill that would end the use of wild animals in circuses across the US.

This is a vital step on the long road to ending circus suffering in the United States – please urge your Representative to support TEAPSPA too »

#6 Magic Moment of 2016: ATTEMPT TO COMPROMISE EU COSMETIC TESTING BAN DEFEATED.

Three companies tried to bring products containing ingredients tested on animals into the European market but were stopped in their tracks by the EU Court of Justice. This was an incredibly important win and also a reminder that we must always be vigilant, even when significant progress appears to have been made. Keep watch!

The heartening news that the EU ban was holding firm was also followed by Australia and Taiwan committing to ending cosmetics testing on animals and we continue to press for legislation to be passed in the US.

#5 Magic Moment of 2016: BIGOTES AND SPIRIT GO FREE!

For most of the animals we rescue from suffering, it is not possible for them to be returned to the wild – they have been too damaged by captivity. But just sometimes…

Baby capuchin Spirit was one of the last monkeys rescued during ADI’s Operation Spirit of Freedom – ADI supporters voted to call him Spirit in honour of the historic mission. Another capuchin, Bigotes, was rescued at the same time. We took them to a rehabilitation programme at Tamushal, just outside Tarpoto, Peru. They have since been released with other monkeys and roam some 150,000 hectares of pristine rainforest, occasionally swinging by the rescue centre with their group of capuchins to say “hello”.

#4 Magic Moment of 2016: CHOLITA AND PEPE CELEBRATE 1 YEAR IN THE FOREST!

Mutilated and abused by a circus, Cholita lost all of her fur due to stress. In one of our most emotional rescues ever, ADI took her home to the Peruvian forest and she couldn’t be happier! From Cholita’s rescue sprang the first sanctuary for these abused bears, as Sabina and Lucho joined her; next year, she gets another new neighbour, Dominga.

Almost 700 miles away in the Amazon forest, Pepe the spider monkey, who we cut from circus chains at the start of Operation Spirit of freedom, is enjoying life with his fellow spider monkeys in the wonderful habitat built by ADI. Around him are dozens of monkeys, coatis, kinkajous, and other animals, all rescued during Operation Spirit of Freedom.

ADI continues to fund the care of all the native animals relocated in Peru – please help if you can »

#3 Magic Moment of 2016: HOOVER FLIES HOME!

It took eight months to track down the circus that held Hoover the tiger, but we never gave up until he was saved. Flying with a huge shipment of Mother’s Day flowers, such was the buzz when Hoover arrived at Miami airport, that a huge illuminated sign across the road welcomed him! Hoover arrived at his brilliant forever home, Big Cat Rescue, on his 12th birthday. A long way from that bare circus cage we found him in, seeing Hoover explore his piece of woodland and swim in his lake was truly perfect.

These rescues are only possible thanks to your kind donations. Please support our life-saving work for animals »

#2 Magic Moment of 2016: NORWAY AND IRAN BAN ANIMALS IN CIRCUSES!

We launched Stop Circus Suffering in Norway with our campaign partners NOAH in 2005, and eleven years later, Norway’s Government has passed regulations ending the use of wild animals in circuses. Things moved faster in Iran, where after a whirlwind campaign supported by ADI, Iran effectively banned wild animal acts, announcing it would no longer issue permits allowing the use of wildlife in circuses.

34 countries have now banned animals in circuses – push for more in 2017 »

#1 Magic Moment of 2016: THE LIONS WENT HOME TO AFRICA!

It was the biggest circus rescue ever undertaken. We tracked down every circus in Peru and rescued every animal. We set a new standard for caring for rescued animals by taking them back to their natural habitats. And it concluded with the biggest airlift of its kind, with over 30 rescued circus lions crossing the globe to Africa.

It took us two years to complete the undercover investigation that would change the laws in South America. Then six years of relentless campaigning to secure the national ban in Peru, followed by nearly two more years to enforce the ban.

However, as we watched those lions step out into the African bush at Emoya Big Cat Sanctuary for the first time, we were not just marvelling at seeing them home where they belong, we knew we had completely eliminated circus suffering in another country – no other animals would suffer in Peru as they had.

ADI continues to pay the food and care costs for the lions and other animals rescued in Peru and Colombia during Operation Spirit of Freedom – including veterinary care, medications, food, staff, habitat maintenance and construction. Half of the lions have been reunited into their prides and moved into their new 5 acre natural habitats, following dental and veterinary surgery and treatments. With your help, we must build up to six more habitats in the first half of 2017. Please donate here:
