Help us Stop Circus Suffering

Posted: 22 February 2008

Contact your MP TODAY and ensure that they sign EDM 965! Animal Welfare in Circuses

Early Day Motion (EDM) 965 tabled by Mark Pritchard MP is currently before the UK Parliament and calls for the Government to maintain its commitment to ban the use of wild animals in travelling circuses and to restrict the use of domesticated animals through the implementation of a strict licensing system. It is important that domestic animals do not get left out in this current decision – the fight for a ban on use of domestic species has been lost – but we need to get something to restrict their use, as the Government is not expected to return to this issue for many years.

On the 19th February 2008, EDM 965 was also signed and supported by the following MPs: Mr. Mike Hancock, Mr. David Taylor, Mr. David Drew, Mrs. Si n C. James, Mrs. Betty Williams, Mr. Desmond Swayne and Mr. Martin Caton.

Almost two years after Minister Ben Bradshaw’s promise to ban wild animals in circuses, lions, tigers, elephants, bears, and other animals are still allowed to tour the UK.

The Circus Working Group report published by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in December 2007 claimed that evidence of animal suffering in circuses is “inconclusive”, despite considerable amounts of documentation submitted by ADI and other animal protection groups. The report was slammed by supportive MPs who have decided to table EDM 965 to ask the Government to stop dragging its feet and to hold its promises.

We urgently need your help to make this ban a reality, in order to make animals in circuses history!

Please write immediately to your Member of Parliament at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA urging them to sign EDM 965.

Time is ticking – it is vital that you contact your MP as soon as possible.

EDM 965 states:

"That this House notes with concern that the Circus Working Group disregarded substantial amounts of evidence on the welfare of animals in circuses as a result of the methodology imposed by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs; believes that the report of the Chair of the Circus Working Group fails to provide reliable information on this subject; and urges the Government to maintain its commitment to ban the use of wild species in travelling circuses and to restrict and limit the use of domesticated species under a strict, accountable and open licensing system."
