As part of the Jingle Bell Rock festival in Bogota, top Colombian rock bands El Sie7e and La Pestilencia held a concert with an audience of over 5000 fans and publicly joined ADI’s the Stop Circus Suffering campaign. The event was sponsored by the Secretary of Culture of the city and the philharmonic orchestra of Bogota.

The bands invited ADI to set up a stand on stage and asked ADI South America Campaigns Coordinator, Juan Pablo Olmos, to join them on stage to deliver a speech. Julián Urrego, lead vocalist of El Sie7e, asked fans not to go to circuses with animals and urged the Colombian Congress to support Bill No. 054/09 to ban the use of animals in circuses.

He went on to say: “This situation must not continue this way, we need to change our attitudes towards animals and ban animals in circuses once and for all.” The band also wore ADI T shirts in support of the campaign. Recently, El Sie7e was nominated for an MTV Latino music award.

Leading band La Pestilencia, asked the audience “When will the Colombian government follow the global example and ban the use of animals in circuses?” Recently, punk band La Pestilencia celebrated its 20 years of achievements. Their controversial lyrics highlight the social and political problems and they are famous for anti-bullfighting songs.

The bill to ban the use of animals in circuses was tabled in the Colombian Congress and will soon be debated in a public hearing in March 2010. ADI has been invited to do a public presentation in support of the bill.

Juan Pablo Olmos said: “We are delighted that leading rock bands El Sie7e and La Pestilencia have joined ADI’s Stop Circus Suffering campaign. We are deeply thankful for being invited on stage last Saturday and we hope to continue working together spreading the word throughout the country. Next year, the Colombian Congress will discuss the bill to ban animals in circuses and we need strong public support to ensure that the bill becomes a law. Last June, Bolivia banned the use of animals in circuses and we hope Colombia will follow this example”.
