On February 18, ADI presented an overview of the Stop Circus Suffering campaign in Colombia and South America at the II National Forum against Animal Abuse.

The forum was chaired by Senator Camilo Sanchez, Liberal Party, and was attended by congress members, local councillors, representatives of the animal protection groups and the public. The event was held in the prestigious Salón Elíptico of the Colombian Senate, in which the plenaries are held.

ADI highlighted the importance of the Bolivian law banning the use of animals in circuses, and urged the Colombian Congress to follow this example. Article 9 of Bill No. 54/2009, which will be discussed in the V Commission of the Senate in a public hearing in March, includes a ban the use of animals in circuses.

Other presenters included Councillor Álvaro Múnera, who highlighted the improvements on animal welfare in the city of Medellín, for example, the replacement of horse driven carts with motor carts and an increase in sterilization programmes. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Environment mentioned that the number of animals in circuses has dropped since 2005 and that the use of animals in circuses will tend to disappear.
ADI would like to thank Senator Sanchez and the organisers of the event for their support.
