On March 26 to 28, ADI took part of the II festival “Lima is not speechless” in the municipality of Pueblo Libre in Peru. The aim of the festival was to promote cultural activities and generate awareness of environmental issues in the country and worldwide.

ADI took a leading role in the festival with an informative stand displaying our campaigning materials and our photography exhibition about circus animal abuse aiming to highlight what goes on behind the scenes in travelling animal circuses. On Saturday 27 March our Stop Circus Suffering DVD was screened at the local library and attended by with dozens of viewers.

ADI launched its Stop Circus Suffering campaign in South America four years ago and its investigation into the conditions that animals endure in travelling circuses in Peru has resulted in proposed legislation being tabled in the Peruvian Congress to ban animal circuses. The bills have been approved in the Agrarian and Andean Peoples Commission, now it is pending its final debate in the Plenary to become law.

Over 600 people that attended the festival signed a petition requesting the Board of Spokespersons of the Congress to immediately discuss the bill to ban the use of animals in circuses in the Plenary.

ADI wishes to thank the organizers of the Festival and the other groups who attended.
