The Trial of Mary Chipperfield
In 1999, Mary Chipperfield, her husband, Roger Cawley, and the elephant keeper, Steve Gills, were all convicted of cruelty on the basis of evidence collected by ADI Field Officers. The trial is the main case law for what is or is not legal in UK circuses. More pertinent than the guilty verdicts were the “not guilty” verdicts for the shocking abuse during during training sessions. Chipperfield called industry vets and other circus presenters to her defence painting a clear picture of what is considered the industry norm.
