Chilean circus owner guilty of cruelty to elephant

Posted: 22 March 2013. Updated: 22 March 2013

The owner of Circus Los Tachuelas in Chile, Joaquin Maluenda, has been found guilty of cruelty to Ramba the elephant.

Maluenda was sentenced by the Court of Guarantee of San Bernardo to 100 days imprisonment and fined. However, due to his previous “good conduct", he will not go to prison.

The circus owner was acquitted of improper trading of protected species because Ramba was acquired in 1998.

The judgment noted that the Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG) had breached its duty, and an investigation into this matter will be conducted.

Ramba, who spent years in the circus, is currently in the care of Rancagua Safari Park, awaiting a possible transfer to a sanctuary in the US.

ADI applauds Chile’s ECOPOLIS who have been at the forefront of the campaign against this circus.
