Belgium set to ban wild animals in circuses

Posted: 19 July 2013. Updated: 23 July 2013

ADI welcomes the news that Belgium looks set to be the next country to introduce a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses.

A Bill introduced by Deputy Prime Minister Laurette Onkelinx is awaiting parliamentary approval, following its endorsement by Ministers last week.

According to campaign group GAIA “More than 130 Belgian cities and towns already prohibit the presence of circuses with wild animals” demonstrating the strength of feeling that there is to the use of wild animals in circuses in the country.

Once the legislation has been passed, Belgium will join the growing number of countries – a dozen in Europe alone – that have introduced nationwide prohibitions on the use of animals in circuses.

The world is finally waking up to the suffering of circus animals and taking action.
