Abused elephant used for Saving Flora movie

Posted: 20 September 2017. Updated: 22 September 2017

Saving Flora, a movie coming out in 2018 about the rescue of a circus elephant, is using an abused elephant actor. ADI has contacted the producers, director and actors to alert them ADI video caught the owners and trainers of Have Trunk Will Travel violently hitting and ‘hooking’ the elephant actor, Tai, with bullhooks and shocking her with stun guns.

ADI sent the movie makers our No Fun for Elephants video, narrated by Emmy award winning TV host Bob Barker, which includes shocking scenes of violence during training and handling of elephants supplied by Have Trunk Will Travel of Perris, CA. Tai and their herd of five elephants are used for public rides, performances as well as other movies. The video footage also depicts abuse of elephants by and Trunks & Humps of Conroe, TX.

In addition to Saving Flora, Tai has starred in many films including Water for Elephants which received a ‘No Animals Were Harmed’ endorsement. However, ADI has shown that unacceptably violent training techniques were used on Tai and other elephants behind the scenes before they arrived on set. This glaring blind spot in the oversight provided by groups like the American Humane Association illustrate at least one way they fail to protect animal actors in movies, commercials and other productions.

ADI is also asking the question, why do studios and production companies keep using animal providers after those companies have been caught abusing animals? Abusive companies like Have Trunk Will Travel should be blacklisted from Hollywood. ADI is reaching out to the American Humane Association asking them to create a policy to never endorse an animal supplier with a history of abuse.

What you can do

Contact FJ Productions who produced Saving Flora, with a polite request to stop using exotic animals in their productions and instead to replace it with humane CGI technology.

Since our No Fun for Elephants campaign launched, many events have ended elephant rides and performances including the Kansas City Renaissance Festival, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Kern County, Orange County, San Diego County and Los Angeles County Fairs, the city of Fountain Valley, CA, and Santa Ana Zoo. ADI is confident that if event organizers are given the facts and understand the cost to the animals, they will say “no” to the suffering.

Together, we can end the brutal training of elephants for entertainment.
