One quarter of sharks and rays threatened with extinction

Posted: 24 January 2014

In the first global study of its kind, covering over 1,000 species, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species has announced this week that a quarter of the world’s sharks and rays are threatened with extinction, with ray species being particularly at risk.

The main threat to these animals is overfishing with official figures likely to be “grossly under-reported”. The shark fin trade is also a major factor in depleted populations.

We can all play a part in helping sharks and rays such as avoiding foods and health products containing their parts, boycotting restaurants serving shark fin and not eating fish for which these animals are netted as “bycatch”.
