Call on Defra to ban the ivory trade!

Posted: 8 November 2016. Updated: 21 November 2016

African elephants have survived for between 5 million to 23 million years now they may not survive the next two decades, as poaching, habitat loss, poverty, and human conflict decimate their numbers.

In the UK, the Conservative party pledged in their 2010 and 2015 manifestos to introduce a full ivory ban. Despite this, only a ban on ivory less than 70 years old was announced by Ministers in September. This will not prevent illicit ivory being passed off as antique.

In response, at the Global March for Elephants & Rhinos in London, a delegation presented a 125 signatory letter to Prime Minister Theresa May, urging her to implement a full ban.

In November, ADI joined fellow elephant advocates outside Defra to urge the government to take action.

Take action to end the ivory trade!
