TV Spy drama features real animal experimentation, filmed by real spies

Posted: 25 May 2005

1st November 2004: Monday night’s (8th November) episode of Spooks, BBC1, will feature a scene in which rodents die horribly from a biological weapon. However, unlike much of the slick BBC drama these disturbing images are the real thing.

The Spooks producers approached the National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS) and asked them to supply suitable footage for the scene. The NAVS were happy to oblige. Intriguingly, the NAVS footage was filmed by real life spies in UK laboratories. NAVS Field Officers work undercover in animal laboratories, and other establishments, using hidden cameras to obtain this footage.

Tim Phillips, NAVS Campaigns Director: “We are sure most people will simply enjoy tonight’s drama, but perhaps our animal experimentation footage will catch a few people’s attention and make them think about the fate of the millions of animals that die in UK laboratories each year. Coincidentally, animal experimentation in the UK is shrouded in such secrecy that the only way to see what actually goes on is to employ “Spooks” style techniques.

"We are also pleased that the production company came to us, rather than using a questionable performing animals company to simulate the scenes.”
