Pereira Municipal Council Declares the City a Hub of Conservation and Animal Protection

PEREIRA, COLOMBIA – 10 August 2010. Following a major exposé of circus animal abuse in Colombia by Animal Defenders International (ADI), the local Council of Pereira has approved an Agreement to declare the city a national hub on animal protection and wildlife conservation.

The Agreement, tabled by Councillor Juan Pablo Gallo, also sets new and strict procedures for keeping and presenting wild animals in public shows in the city. The text was discussed on 25 July and approved unanimously by all party representatives. ADI supported Councillor Gallo and presented the findings of our investigation on the use of animals in circuses in Colombia as well as providing legal, factual and scientific arguments in support of the motion. We also screened our video “Unnatural Acts” that shocked councillors and members of the public. Local organisations CLAN and Vida Silvestre also made presentations.

The Agreement was supported by cross party Councillors Fernando Arias, Ruben Darío Orozco, Alfonso Molina, Peterson Lopera, Jaime Alberto Arango Milton René Chavez and Yesid Rozo who also urged the National Congress to table a bill to ban the use of all animals in circuses.

Juan Pablo Olmos, ADI’s South America Campaigns Coordinator said: “We are delighted that the Pereira Council has taken this compassionate step. This strict regulation will effectively phase out the use of wild animals in circuses in the heart of Colombia’s coffee region and set a standard to other cities by declaring itself in favour of animal protection and wildlife conservation. We salute Councillor Gallo’s efforts and urge the Congress to table legislation to ban the use of animals in circuses.”

The Agreement has been recently signed by the City Mayor and was recently published by the Council’s official gazette.
