Animal rescue film in the chase for NAACP Image Award

Posted: 20 February 2014. Updated: 20 February 2014

Lion Ark, the feature length documentary about the rescue of 25 lions from cruel circuses in Bolivia, will be up for an Outstanding International Motion Picture award at the 45th NAACP Image Awards ceremony tomorrow night in Pasadena.

The prestigious Image Awards by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), America’s oldest and largest civil rights organization, celebrates "the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts, as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors.”

Nominees for Outstanding International Motion Picture will learn if they have won at the NAACP Image Awards dinner in Pasadena on Friday night, prior to a televised awards show on Saturday night.

When:
Friday, February 21, 2014 at 5:30 PM

Where:
Pasadena Civic Center - Convention Center
300 E. Green Street, Pasadena, CA 91101

Actress Jorja Fox, known worldwide for her role as Sara Sidle in CSI, is an Associate Producer of Lion Ark and appears in the film: “The NAACP is this amazing force for equality, advocacy, and social progress. It’s a huge honor to be nominated. Thanks NAACP! Lion Ark is about lions and the stars of the film are lions. But it’s also about a small group of very dedicated people coming together from five different nations to make a positive difference in the world and the bravery of a small nation to be a pioneer in social vision.”

Lion Ark is not a traditional “talking heads” documentary but is pieced together from the live action and conversations as events actually unfold during the dramatic rescue mission. The film has been a hit on the film festival circuit since launching in October with sell out screenings and picking up several awards.

Tim Phillips, Director of Lion Ark: “It is a huge honor to be considered for this award by an organization that has done so much to bring about social change. At a glance some may not see Lion Ark as an obvious choice but it is a film about people from vastly different backgrounds and many different countries coming together to bring about change. It is a film about cooperation and working for a better world. Lion Ark also shows how animal protection is a part of the fabric of social justice, where human society draws a line as to what is, and is not, acceptable.”

Jan Creamer, Lion Ark Producer and President of Animal Defenders International, who led the rescue: “It’s a great honor to be nominated by an organization like the NAACP, which has made such a huge difference in the world. This nomination holds a special place in the hearts of a team like ours – we work across all kinds of boundaries and differences for a better world. Brits, Americans, Bolivians, Colombians, Peruvians, we all came together to help. All of us overcame language barriers and cultural differences during this project.”

In addition to Lion Ark the other five nominees in the Outstanding International Motion Picture category are: War Witch; Call Me Kuchu; La Playa D.C.; High Tech, Low Life.

Others up for awards this year in different categories include Beyoncé, John Legend, Halle Berry, Oprah Winfrey, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Hudson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Forest Whitaker.
