ADI's Garden Party in Los Angeles a huge success; raises thousands of dollars for animals!

Animal Defenders International celebrated its biggest fundraiser of the year so far yesterday, raising much-needed funds for its current animal rescue mission in Guatemala, where it has already saved 5 former circus lions and 9 tigers. ADI will be flying the lions ‘home’ to the new ADI Wildlife Sanctuary (ADIWS) in South Africa.

Held in the Hancock Park garden of longtime ADI supporters the Rev. Dr. Gwynne Guibord and Dr. Lo Sprague, the laid-back event featured organic Frey wines and Lagunitas Brewery beers, and gift bags filled with items including Paul Mitchell and Aromatherapy Associates beauty products, Justin’s and Blacklight chocolates, Beaming juices – companies who all support ADI’s work.

ADI President Jan Creamer said, “For the second year running we are delighted by the success of this fantastic and fun event. We are extremely grateful to our generous hosts and guests, who are enabling ADI to establish our own sanctuary, which will be home to generations of animals to come.”

Many partygoers embraced the ‘White shirt’ theme, in honor of the unofficial ‘uniform’ worn by Jan and Vice President Tim Phillips on their animal rescue missions; guests sporting white shirts were entered into a drawing to win prizes including doggy day care at PoshPetCare, toxin-free nail polishes from Habit Cosmetics, and a Guatemalan print bag.

Highlights included presentations of dedication plaques to sponsors of ADIWS buildings, including visitor and education centers, and a screening of the short film ANIMA, which explores how different religions treat animals.

A silent auction of beautiful framed images of animals rescued by ADI, including Pepe the spider monkey, a star of the recent Animal Planet: Dodo Heroes series, had guests eager to outbid each other for the striking artwork.

A huge hit of the night was a ‘toy’ previously ‘enjoyed’ by Kimba, one of the Guatemalan circus lions. Billed as a piece of animal protection history, the mangled, hairy watering can – which ADI had mounted, along with images of Kimba steadily destroying the can – fetched $5,000 from a very generous bidder!

Added Tim Phillips, “Once again, this summer garden party has been instrumental in helping ADI reach its fundraising goals. However, there is still a long way to go, and we encourage our supporters to host their own fundraising events.”
