133 MPs sign up for ban of animals in circuses

Posted: 9 May 2006. Updated: 7 December 2011

133 MPs have signed up to a ban on the use of animals in travelling circuses in the Animal Welfare Bill putting their signatures to an Early Day Motion (EDM) tabled by MP Mike Hancock for Animal Defenders International (ADI). The Bill is currently in the House of Lords and will next be discussed in Grand Committee on 23 May 2006 before going to its third reading in the Lords in late June.

Jan Creamer, Chief Executive of ADI, said: “The growing support from MPs shows our campaign has struck a chord with many in the House of Commons. ADI’s latest briefing on “The science on suffering” for the House of Lords cites scientific studies that show how the transportation and confinement of animals gives rise to the greatest suffering. These findings are confirmed by ADI’s empirical evidence gathered in March and April of this year from UK circuses.”
