US primate bushmeat charges

A New York woman who hails from Liberia has been indicted for allegedly trying to smuggle monkey meat into the US. Msamie Manneh, 39, claims she brought the monkey parts in for religious ceremonies. She has since attracted pro bono legal assistance from a top law firm and testimony from expert witness Jacob Olupona, a professor of African religious traditions at Harvard Divinity School. However, even if she proved her religious rights, prosecutors allege that Manneh failed to get the necessary permits for the import under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. If convicted, the defendant could face up to five years in jail, a fine, or a combination of the two.

Manneh is currently serving a two-year prison sentence in an unrelated case for running over her husband’s girl friend in the parking lot of a movie theatre in February 2006. The victim survived.
