Humane Cosmetics Act Reintroduced

Posted: 27 October 2015. Updated: 28 October 2015

The Humane Cosmetics Act (HR2858) would prohibit animal testing for cosmetics in one year and the sale/transport of products so tested after three. Previously introduced by ADI Animal Champion and now retired Rep. Jim Moran, ADI commends sponsors Rep. McSally, Beyer, Heck, and Cárdenas for its reintroduction. "Subjecting animals to painful and inhumane testing is not who we are as a country. There’s no reason to continue this cruel practice when we have cost-effective alternatives that can bring about safe products” Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ)

ADI collaborated with the UK’s National Anti-Vivisection Society on the 2013 European ban; we endorse HR2858, and urge supporters to press their member of Congress to bring the US in line with public opinion and the 28-country European Union.

Meanwhile, the Personal Care Products Safety Act (S1014 by Sen. Feinstein) would likely increase product testing, and while it purports to encourage cruelty-free methods, it does not prohibit animal testing. ADI cannot support S1014 without mandates against animal testing.

Make sure you only buy cruelty-free products and contact your members of Congress asking them to support the Humane Cosmetics Act and insist that the Personal Care Products Safety Act is cruelty-free.
