Ask your MP to support a #BetterDealforAnimals

Posted: 14 February 2019. Updated: 14 February 2019

Will you help ensure animals get the protection they deserve and need when the UK leaves the European Union?

Under an EU Treaty, animals are recognised as sentient beings, whose welfare must be protected, across Europe. This vital recognition will be lost in the UK after Brexit.

Despite its promises, we are concerned UK Government plans to incorporate animal sentience into national law will fall short, making animals vulnerable. In reality this could mean new laws, policies and trade deals will fail to take into account their welfare needs.

Please take action today and urge your MP to show some love for animals and support a #BetterDealForAnimals.

Ask them to attend the Parliamentary reception on Tuesday 26th February and sign Early Day Motion 2070, making sure government gets a clear message from MPs that animals deserve the best legal protection.

Contact your MP here using the template letter provided below. You can check if your MP has signed EDM 2070 here.

ADI has joined forces with more than 30 other animal protection organisations to make sure that the welfare needs of animals are considered. Find out more here.

I am surprised and disappointed to hear that the government is threatening to break its promise of making sure animals do not lose legal protections after Brexit.

Under EU Treaty provisions, animals are recognised as ‘sentient beings’ whose welfare must be given full regard in policy-making. Government plans for an Animal Welfare Bill post-Brexit however fall short of this level of protection, leaving laws to protect animals at risk of being watered down as a result of the UK leaving the European Union.

Like millions of people across the UK, I want a #BetterDealForAnimals.

Please will you show your support for this campaign by dropping in to the Churchill Room, 12.30-14.30 on Tuesday 26 February, and signing the Early Day Motion calling for a legal duty on Ministers to consider animals’ welfare when new laws are made?

As your constituent, I hope you will do all you can to make sure the forthcoming Animal Welfare Bill provides genuine protection to all sentient beings.

Yours sincerely
